LARS MEYER
Sustainable Water
As water becomes the next critical commodity in a rapidly warming world, the prestigious Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg Prize for industrial design articles was awarded in 2007 to German designer Lars Meyer, for a brilliantly simple proposal to purify drinking water in Bangladesh. After studying low-tech possibilities for water purification – and analyzing the many failures of systems provided by conventional aid schemes – Meyer came up with an inexpensive (and close to foolproof) process using the seeds of a fast-growing tropical tree and indigenous pottery-making. The designer’s respect for the culture of Bangladesh is the motivating force behind this potentially world-changing project. A small but fascinating book.
