HERMANN BAUR
Objectivity in Concrete
Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel
Built in 1961, Basel’s Allgemeine Gewerbeschule technical school complex is a mid-century modernist masterpiece in pristine concrete. It is just one of many iconic designs by Hermann Baur (1894-1980), one of the most significant Swiss architects of the pre- and post-war periods. On the occasion of a major 2011 renovation of the school, this book focuses on Baur’s original design inspirations, his innovative use of concrete and the social importance of the public buildings used for the vocational school and the school for design. A wealth of current and vintage photography illustrates this homage to a Swiss architectural classic and to its respectful renovation.
