Any Moment Now
The monograph Valeska Soares: Any Moment Now accompanies the U.S. survey exhibition of installations produced by the artist during the past twenty-five years. Soares is part of an important generation of Brazilian artists that began exhibiting professionally during the late 1980s & early 1990s, including Jac Leirner, Ernesto Neto, and Adriana Varejão. Having moved to New York in the early 1990s, she also belongs to a larger, international group of installation artists, such as Mona Hatoum, Doris Salcedo, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Soares’ site specific installations push the dimensions of the sensorial into the realms of not just vision and touch, but also scent. Her work defines a new notion of “participatory” art, triggering in viewers an impulse to not only interact, but also inciting memory, poetry, and varying notions of time. The handsomely illustrated catalog documents and contextualizes the work of this mid-career artist, serving as the most comprehensive publication to-date.
