I can call this progress to halt, the project and exhibition (March–April 2017) at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions), considers gestures of protest, unrest, and incendiary exchange as the starting point to a conversation with twenty international artists asked to contribute texts, poems, images, and visual stories to expand upon the challenging themes. The project consists of a series of weekly screenings, presentations, and performances, all brought together in the final catalog. Considered together, they function as dispersed, floating representations of contested moments in time that refuse to stand fixed, but instead circulate and vehemently invoke another engagement with the world. Within the presentation and further developed in the catalog, the exhibited works, screenings, performances—as well as texts, images, and the artists’ research— demand that the notion of progress to be called upon, re-thought, and challenged, in particular its capitalist logic of advancement. Featured artists and contributors include international curator Suzy Halajian and artists Raqs Media Collective, Jalal Toufic, Alejandro Cesarco, Rosalind Nashashibi, and Kandis Williams, among others.
