CHRISTOPHER LE BRUN
New Paintings
Renowned for his evocative figural imagery, British artist Christopher Le Brun’s new work builds upon his rich cultural literacy, from Virgil and Tennyson to composer William Walton. Following his appearance in several high-profile international exhibitions in the 1980s—including Zeitgeist at the Martin-Gropius- Bau, Berlin, considered the first “blockbuster” exhibition—Le Brun catapulted to the forefront of European contemporary art, his painterly canvases filling permanent collections from the Tate to MoMA, NY. Still prolific, this volume reproduces Le Brun’s most recent series, filled with vibrant and fully saturated reds and yellows notable for their move to pure abstraction. Alongside full-color illustrations, this volume includes a personal response by artist and writer Edmund de Waal and an introduction by art historian David Anfam that places the work within the tradition of late 20th- and early 21st-century modern painting. Accompanying a solo exhibition at Friedman Benda, New York in late 2014.
