Where The …
Stephan Berg & Volker Adolphs (Eds.)
After years of international success as a major contemporary German artist and sculp- tor, Georg Herold (b. 1947) finally felt comfortable preparing for his first comprehensive retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Bonn (September 2017–July 2018). Supporting the exhibition is this generously illustrated catalog presenting three decades of work. Herold, who studied under Sigmar Polke from 1977 until 1983, was part of the ground-breaking group of young German artists (Kippenberger, Büttner, and Oehlen) that swept through the 1980’s changing the conversation in contemporary art forever. From the start, Herold challenged traditional forms of pictorial representation through his use of the most com- mon materials, cardboard, and paper mache, while presenting his subject matters filled with irony. Essays by Volker Adolphs, Stephan Berg, Georg Herold, Glen O’Brien, Jochen Stremmel, and Kerstin Stremmel. This is Herold’s third publication with Snoeck.
