Gert & Uwe Tobias
The sensational young twins, Gert and Uwe Tobias, in a few short years, have shot from small galleries in Germany to MoMA in New York (November 2007 - February 2008). Their success is especially unusual because they work largely in the world of printed graphics: specifically, the woodcut, a medium long believed to be extinct. Yet with a many-layered process and a combination of figurative and abstract elements, they have made the woodcut come alive again. This substantial exhibition catalog also includes witty “typewritter illustrations” (composed on the typewriter keyboard), and many mixed media works, all of which show the brother’s distinctive combination of humor, horror, playfulness, and graphic mastery. “The art of Gert and Uwe Tobias, the body of work that is their ‘Exquisite Corpse’, equally beautiful, beguiling, and mysterious, continues to unfold,” writes Bob Nickas in an included essay.
