Jin Meyerson
2001-2007
It’s hard to believe that this is the first publication ever for painter Jin Meyerson: his psychedelic, compulsively detailed, brilliantly colorful works are unique and masterful. Born in 1972 in South Korea, Meyerson grew up in the United States, and he is obviously fascinated by glossy surfaces, media imagery and the sorts of technology that create candy-colored motorcycles and oil-drilling platforms. It’s easy to call this work surreal, but on a deeper level Meyerson is a chronicler of contemporary life, representing the world in terms of the effects that objects have on us. In Meyerson’s paintings, it seems as if the world is being sucked into a vortex – or several – which spins with everything from refugees and third-world garbage dumps to NFL jerseys. Writes curator Jasper Sharp in an excellent introduction, Meyerson’s work transmits “a clear sense of urgency … a message of alarm and discomfort.” A stunning, oversized volume with a huge, fold-out reproduction bound into the center.
