“I am fascinated by dreams,” says German artist Christof Mascher. “For me the best thing is to combine simple stories with the feeling of a dream – with the abstractions that are possible in a dream.” This small catalogue is the first solo publication for this young artist (born 1979). Mascher’s dreamlike pictorial worlds are characterized by strangely fascinating yet threatening hybrid beings, which are linked to a psychically alarming sense of power. His colorful, foreboding pieces – some of which are miniatures meticulously drawn on veneer – conjure what his teacher, Walter Dahn, describes as a “post-World War IV atmosphere.” An exciting introduction to an important emerging artist.
