Jan Dibbets
Horizons
The question of the horizon, one of the recurring themes in the work of Dutch conceptualist Jan Dibbets, returns in this exhibition catalog from the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Hague. In this poetic and clever new work, using the photographic image in an almost geometric collage, Dibbets takes two photographs, a landscape and a seascape, and repeatedly juxtaposes them in various ways that divide the horizon. Coming out of the 1970s European conceptual art movement, Dibbets is a major figure in Dutch art and on the international scene; his brilliant 1994 installation, Homage to Arago, embedded bronze disks in the sidewalks of Paris to mark the meridian specified by the 18th century astronomer. Includes a strong analysis by Rudi Fuchs.
