Wolfgang Tillmans & Brigitte Oetker (Eds.)
This year’s edition of the Jahresring journal What Is Different? is designed and edited by artist Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968). Throughout the 2000s, Tillmans has worked on a series called truth study centre, which is concerned with absolute claims of truth in social and political contexts. Addressing issues of newly resurfaced right-wing populism, fake news, and psychological findings such as the backfire effect, Tillmans focuses on what changes have occured over the past forty years rather than analyzing the status quo. Why are societal consensus and institutions now under attack? Interviews with scientists, politicians, journalists, and social workers highlight the pressing issues. In addition, a study is included that researchs what happens in our brain, ethics, and online behavior when confronted with statements opposing our political beliefs. Tillmans pairs these texts with his own images found in print and online. An added surprise are new works made by Tillmans using an outdated four-color scanner from the 1990s. Texts by Philipp Hübl, Jonas Kaplan, Joe Keohane, and Michael Seemann, and interviews with Lionel Barber, Carolin Emcke, Sigmar Gabriel, Bianca Klose, Stephan Lewandowsky, Brendan Nyhan, and Wolfgang Schäuble.
