Braindead

Italian artist Laurina Paperina’s Braindead is a pop-culture feat of comedy and commentary. In the 80 colorful drawings included here, Paperina applies her free-wheeling brand of cultural satire to a wide range of iconic characters. Who else could mix Homer Simpson (whose brain is depicted as a donut with sprinkles), Jackson Pollock and the Pope in one sharply observed book? Yes, there’s plenty of Technicolor brain tissue, but instead of leaving the viewer feeling repulsed, Paperina uses her stylized graphic motifs to hit on the essence of each character - what makes them tick - and as a result, the surprising clumps of brain become laugh-aloud funny.
