Cultural Activism Today

One of the most interesting approaches to culture and politics to emerge in a long time, Cultural Activism Today brings together an impressive list of artists, architects and theoreticians. Based on the symposium “Cultural Activism Today: Strategies of Over-Identification” at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, this publication tackles the new wave of cultural activism that has occurred through anti-populist or anti-globalist struggles. Exemplified by the work of contributors in whose practice “over-identification” features centrally, it explores the potential of this strategy to return “cultural activism” to a potent, undermining force. The over-identification stance is defined here as: the art/political activity of citizens in order to offer a critique of the shortcomings of today’s society, “to offer ‘constructive’ lines of light,” while avoiding being too cultural, political or idealistic. Dieter Lesage, BAVO (Gideon Boie en Matthias Pauwels), Boris Groys, Alexei Monroe, Santiago Sierra, OMA/AMO, Atelier van Lieshout, Laibach and Irwin, Molly Nesbit, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Rirkit Tiravanija and many others participated.
