Under Pressure
Pictures, Subjects, and the New Spirit of Capitalism
Daniel Birnbaum, Isabelle Graw, Institut für Kunstkritik
Art isn’t just about creating work anymore. Today, external pressures and constraints play a large role in the artistic process and production. In recognition of this reality, the Institut für Kunstkritik held a series of conferences in 2006 and 2007 to explore the value system that results from what they dubbed the New Spirit of Capitalism and to confront theoretical models with ad-hoc conditions of production. The thoughts of conference participants Luc Boltanski, Sabeth Buchmann, Tim Griffin, W.J.T. Mitchell, Sighard Neckel, Martin Saar, and Paolo Virno are compiled in this book of questions and dilemmas for today’s cultural producers and society at large.
