Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas

When the Soviet Union occupied the independent Republic of Lithuania in 1940, it also took over Lithuania’s gracious embassy in Rome, which has housed the Russian Consulate in Rome ever since. At the 2007 Venice Biennale, Lithuanian architects Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas proposed an architectural restoration of the Villa – including a pigeon race from Venice to Rome. This book is more than a catalog: it is a cross-disciplinary reader that details their project and also includes an essay by Viktor Misiano on the ties between the Italian and Soviet Communist party and another by Julian Stallabrass about the use of Marxist critique within contemporary art.
