New Dimensions in Landscape Philosophy
Pietsie Feenstra, Wapke Feenstra & myvillages.org
Who has owned the land? Who has created the landscape? Who has determined its cultural rhythm and production? This intellectual collaboration by the Feenstra sisters, photographer Wapke and Sorbonne media professor Pietsie, is curated by myvillages.org, a cooperative artist initiative in the European countryside that explores the rural environment as a place for cultural production. The visual essay combines photos by Wapke with those photos shot by local residents along with poetry and information about the land and a grass herbarium. This effort is further illuminated by Pietsie’s essay on cultural history, which takes us on a filmic journey through a landscape in the northern Dutch province of Friesland and ultimately opens a window onto new European approaches to national identity.
