Timeless Necessity
Louise Schouwenberg
What do beauty and sustainability have in common? The 21st century increasingly demands sustainable design. In practice, this generates products and services laden with moral undertones, which are indeed ethically responsible but fail to appeal to the imagination or convince consumers. In other words, sustainable design is not very beautiful. The IM Masters program of the Design Academy, focused on conceptual design in context, decided that this has to change. During four study periods, students examined the problems we face in the 21st century and the role designers can play in seeking alternatives. Guided by teachers and visiting lecturers, they researched materials and production techniques and formulated visions on beauty and ethical design. Timeless Necessity is both ethics and aesthetics. Source 03 includes diverse texts from both experts and students, as well as research, conclusions along with photos of the final design proposals. An exciting new look into design and marketing!
