Noboru Okano
From the master Japanese advertising designer Noburu Okano, an eye-popping color retrospective of 20 years of posters, flyers, pamphlets, invitations and novelties designed to advertise a world of cinema. Many of the films are Japanese, but a good percentage are American, like Brokeback Mountain, Hotel Rwanda and Gus van Sant’s Elephant. It is a revelation to see how differently Okano approached using the film images for the Japanese market, what he chose to emphasize, compared to the American market’s designers. In every case, his mastery of the medium shines through. A fantastic opportunity to see how a product can be marketed in a different culture.
