GERTI DEUTSCH, THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Work 1935 – 1965
One of the few freelance female photographers who came to prominence in the early 20th century, between the wars, Gerti Deutsch was born in Vienna and fled to London in 1938, where her career flourished in exile. This exhibition catalog, with over a hundred black and white images, is the first to offer insight into Deutsch’s complete photographic work. Shooting with a Leica, Deutsch documented the political and social environment in the same genre as Robert Capa and other contemporaries, shooting perceptive photo essays for Tattler, Harper’s Bazaar, Picture Post and other important British publications. The catalog also looks at her post-war work, including features shot in her birthplace of Vienna and other European locations. An exciting re-discovery for photojournalism buffs.
