Since 2000, the German-born photographer Katharina Mayer (b. 1958) has worked on an expansive series titled Familienbande, or Family Ties, built around portraits that she has made of families from multiple cultures and varying social strata. Be it an artist, refugee, teacher, or entrepreneur, each family is photographed in their home— always dressed in their best—in rooms of their choosing that provide an insight into their very personal biography. Studying under the Bechers in the late 1980s in Dusseldorf, Mayer captures images that contain a visual rigor and sense of order that emphasize family dynamics. The images also raise general questions about values, religious affiliation, community, conflict, responsibility, love, and tolerance. Mayer’s extensive monograph, presenting more than 150 color images, allow the viewer to become lost in the family dynamics of each crisply staged photograph.
