125TH: TIME IN HARLEM

Isaac Diggs & Edward Hillel

125th: Time in Harlem examines Harlem’s paradox of place: the tension between the everyday reality of its streets and the cultural brand it has established in our collective imagination. Through the collaboration of photographers Isaac Diggs, a professor at the School of Visual Arts, and Edward Hillel, founder of the Harlem Biennial, the multidimensional project took flight. Rich, large-format color photographs weave through essays by Vicki Goldberg and historian Jonathan Gill, telling a story of a place and a moment in the history of this iconic African American community. As photography critic and curator Goldberg writes of the project, “Two men with a camera, thoughtfully observing the visual cacophony of one major thoroughfare and the complicated interplay of its history.” A limitededition of 1,000; each copy signed by the artists.

THE WOMEN OF WOODCOCK

Laura Hynd

The Women of Woodcock is the companion photo book to the just released award-nominated film Phantom Thread, from the auteur director Paul Thomas Anderson. Starring the Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day Lewis in his last role, as Reynolds Woodcock, the film portrays an uncompromising fashion couturier in 1950s London — and the women that surrounded him: clients that included royalty, society debutantes, and heiresses, as well as his sister who runs the fashions house, the seamstresses, and his mistresses.

Gaining full access to backstage and on set, the English photographer Laura Hynd documented the fictional House of Woodcock: Hynd and her camera moved fluidly back and forth between costume fittings, the set, epic crowd scenes, extras, and classic portrait sessions. With insider access Hynd explored the fictional couturier with a specifically female gaze. Through her camera, all the women in the House of Woodcock, from royalty to atelier staff, are celebrated equally — a deliberate concept supported and highlighted by the inclusion of handful carefully selected frames from the movie. The Women of Woodcock is stunning, artful, and unexpected — much like Phantom Thread itself.

3 FILMS 3 PHOTOGRAPHS

A Critical Reader

Mario Pfeifer (Ed.)

A slender artist’s book by the German artist Mario Pfeifer centers around three films and three related photographs that become transformed into a reader to examine a range of issues from a cultural and media point of view. Focusing on how we produce notions of culture, history and knowledge, as well as the roles media such as film, books and exhibitions play, the artist looks at the factors that influence our identity and our perspectives. The volume explores the risks inherent in image production for the means of knowledge, and ways that these concerns are made visible within film and photography itself. Texts by Michael Ned Holte, Christy Lange, Nicolas Linnert, Vanessa Joan Müller and Vivien Trommer.

ACTION – CAMERA

Beijing Performance Photography

Keith Wallace, Thomas J. Berghuis, and Maya Kóvskaya

China’s performance art discipline has evolved over the past 20 years into a new style: staged photography. The arresting, frequently shocking, images in this exhibition catalogue create a dialogue about Chinese culture’s traditional and modern incarnations that incorporates gender-bending, nudity and global landmarks. These early photos were originally documentation, yet have emerged as an integral component of the Chinese performance scene. Within this historical framework, Action – Camera is a seminal contribution to both Chinese art and performance. Featured artists include Ai Weiwei, Cang Xin, Dai Guangyu, the Gao Brothers, Han Bing, He Yunchang, He Chengyao, Hong Hao, Li Wei, Ma Liuming, RongRong, Wang Qingsong, Xing Danwen, Zhang Huan and Zhu Ming.

AGES

Portraits of Growing Older

Gabrielle Conrath-Scholl & Gabriele Spindler

Photography and film are among the few artistic mediums that can openly and poignantly record the process of aging. In works such as the systematic documentation of the Brown sisters by Nicholas Nixon or Roni Horn’s installation of random portraits of herself taken over her entire life by friends and family but never before seen by the artist, the camera allows us to intimately experience the ever-changing self. In this deeply moving exhibition catalog, curators Gabrielle Conrath-Scholl and Gabriele Spindler have selected specific works that pose questions about life choices, destiny and the influences that affect the evolution of the physical image. Featured artists, Richard Avedon, Christian Borchert, Rineke Dijkstra, Seiichi Furuya, Stefanie Grebe, Roni Horn, Wilma Hurskainen, Anna Jermolaewa, Friedl Kubelka, Michael Mauracher, Nicholas Nixon, Thomas Struth and more.

DARREN ALMOND

Nocturne

A stunning and unusual exhibition catalog—five pamphlets in a slipcase—suits the remarkable photography of film- and photo-based artist Darren Almond. The British artist makes his images using only the light of the full moon, suffusing his work with an intensely personal atmosphere. Almond makes sculptures, films, photos and works on paper, often based on his extensive travels to destinations like China and Tibet. These new works supplement a recurrent serial of time exposures of various landscapes under the full moon. Interested in time, place, personal history and collective memory, Almond has developed his own photographic lexicon. A finalist for the Turner Prize in 2005, he has also exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Berlin Biennale, the K21 in Dusseldorf and the Tate Britain.

DARREN ALMOND

The Giverny Polaroids

Noted British artist and Turner Prize–nominee Darren Almond has developed an extraordinary practice of creating mesmerizing photographs captured under the light of the full moon. After his 2012 exhibition at the Villa Merkel and the resulting video Nocturne, Almond created this stunning artist book that showcases his moonlit Polaroid images of Claude Monet’s iconic garden. “Except for painting and gardening,” Monet once wrote to a friend, “I’m useless.” In 1883, the Impressionist painter left his life in Paris for the idyllic natural splendor of Giverny, where he created his famous water lily pond and Japanese bridge. Those very flowers become the sculptural motifs for Almond’s ethereal new work. To produce a more sculptural experience, each image is tipped-in to the page, along with a clear plastic cover wrapping constructed to hold a small picture of the famous lily pond.

IRIS ANDRASCHEK

Wait until the Night Is Silent

Esther Kinsky & Martin Chalmers (Eds.)

In her newest artist book, Wait until the Night Is Silent, Austrian photographer Iris Andraschek continues her interest in the changing status and image of young women in the late 20th and early 21st century. Begun during a residency in Durham, Ontario (2002), and completed in 2010 on a return visit, this project depicts a community of people living an alternative back-to-nature existence as a fairy-tale-like communitas. There is a staged presence in Andraschek’s images, like Degas’s ballerina paintings, as she alternates between reality and fiction in this critique of the work, leisure and consumerist regimes of industrial societies. Andraschek’s photographs combine the narrative of the socio-document with a unique artistic fluidity and otherworldly sense of being within her intimate portraits. With contributions from Berlin-based writer Esther Kinsky and the late Martin Chalmers.

CLAUDIA ANGELMAIER

L’image et l’objet

Who owns an art “masterpiece?” How does a work’s value in the marketplace, or its status in art history, affect its meaning? In her photos and assemblages, German photographer Claudia Angelmaier uses book pages, postcards, or slides of well-known works and turns these reproductions into revelations about what is “behind” the masterpiece. Especially in the most recent series “Works on Paper,” in which she photographs the back sides of postcards, the strong back lighting and slightly translucent image of the front side results in an interplay of visibility and vanishing. Angelmaier’s powerful work follows in the footsteps of contemporary photo-based artists, Louise Lawler and Sherrie Levine, asking fundamental questions about appropriation art.
