Linda Herzog
Birmingham, Istanbul, Zürich
Is One Big Europe a reality? Swiss photographer Herzog seems to think so: she snapped photos in three cities - her hometown of Zurich, the once-industrial hub of Birmingham (United Kingdom) and the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul - then chose 52 color pictures for this thought-provoking book. The result is an essay on urban life in the European Community today. Herzog’s discerning eye finds more commonalities than differences; it takes detailed observation to figure out where each photo was taken. For one more trans-national touch, the book was designed in Zurich, typeset in Cologne, and printed in Istanbul. Awarded Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2005 and Selection German Photography Book Award 2005.
