ILSE FRECH

I Am – Paradox Identity

Photographer Ilse Frech produces an innovative, unbound folio that gives a larger-than-life view of dozens of young Muslim women who live in the outer suburbs of Paris. Frech, whose other major projects include Russia Love and Family Document, interviewed and photographed women in their homes and at work to explore their relationships with their own religion and culture, with French culture, with their race, and with being young women. The intimate photographs and interview excerpts compile a ménage of individuals who lead, in many ways, dual lives. Waves of immigration in Europe have led to greater diversity and wrenching confrontation; this deeply human collection of photographs combats stereotypes of Muslims and Muslim culture.

Andrew Freeman

[Manzanar] Architecture Double

A richly illustrated display of history, memory, and the contingencies of remembrance. Photographer Andrew Freeman’s [Manzanar] Architecture Double is a work based on mapping, tracing and recovering through photography the buildings which originally made up Manzanar, the notorious Japanese-American internment camp in California’s Owens Valley. At the end of World War II, the federal government moved quickly to dismantle the camp, selling off hundreds of the barracks to anyone who would move them to another location. But even though the camp itself “disappeared,” the buildings live on. Manzanar documents the current condition and location of many buildings used at the camp, and in the process expresses how man indelibly layers the land with history, landscape and architecture. As Matthew Coolidge, director at the Center of Land Use and Interpretation, writes, “Each of the buildings is an architectural face that speaks of the assimilation of this dark side or the American story.“

THOMAS FREILER

Cameras Work

This catalog extensively and lavishly surveys the work of photographeracademic Thomas Freiler, whose inventive and unorthodox work grows out of Kandinsky and van Doesburg’s concept of “concrete art.” This abstractionist trend—still vigorous today—proposes an autonomous inner organization in painting and plastic art independent of the external visual reality. Freiler’s photograms are made without a camera, using techniques that involve a minimum of tools and a variety of lightsensitive materials and chemicals. Made using techniques that date back to the very beginnings of photography, the images have an expressive, timeless quality. In color and black and white, many of the images mix media to add to the depth of the art.

LEE FRIEDLANDER

The American Monument

Peter Galassi & Leslie George Katz (Eds.)

Originally published to great acclaim in 1976, The American Monument has become one of the most sought-after photography publications of the 20th century. Long out of print, this second edition is once again available again for all to enjoy and own. Published in the same oversized format as the first edition—with exquisite duotone reproductions of the original 213 photographs—the album of post-bound single sheets can easily be disassembled for display. Considered by many, including Friedlander himself, to be one of his most important books, The American Monument has influenced generations of photographers, curators and art historians. The second edition includes the original essay by Eakins Press founder Leslie George Katz along with a new essay by eminent past NYC’s Museum of Modern Art’s photography curator and Friedlander scholar Peter Galassi, which illuminates the history and continued significance of this iconic artist and this early publication. The deeply influential American curator of photography at MoMA during the 1960s-70s, John Szarkowski (1927–2007), stated: “I am still astonished and heartened by the deep affection of those pictures, by the photographer’s tolerant equanimity in the face of the facts, by the generosity of spirit, the freedom from pomposity and rhetoric. One might call this work an act of high artistic patriotism, an achievement that might help us reclaim that word from ideologues and expediters.” Lee Friedlander is the recipient of three Guggenheim Fellowships as well as a MacArthur Fellowship. He has published more than 50 monographs since 1969, and exhibited extensively around the world for the past five decades, including a major retrospective at the MoMA, NY, in 2005.

LEE FRIEDLANDER

Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom

On May 17, 1957, Lee Friedlander was given full access to photograph the participants of the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom in Washington, DC. This extraordinary event brought together many of the great thinkers and leaders of the civil rights movement and solidified Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s position as its preeminent leader. The 58 previously unpublished photographs reproduced as duotones in this important and beautifully produced commemorative record are among Friedlander’s earliest work. With his full access to the presenters’ stage, Friedlander was able to portray the famous individuals at the event—Mahalia Jackson, A. Philip Randolph, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, among many others—as well as the audience of some 25,000 men, women and children who gathered to give voice and energy to the ideas embattled by the movement. Timed with the three-year anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the Prayer Pilgrimage placed pressure on the Eisenhower administration to uphold desegregation in the South and made voting rights a focal point of the struggle for equality. Also included in this publication is a facsimile typescript from The King Center of MLK’s “Give Us the Ballot” speech and additional ephemera from the march, including the printed program and the “Call to Prayer” distributed to participants. The complete (and only existing) set of the 58 prints, acquired by Yale University Art Gallery, will be on exhibition at YUAG and other venues in 2017 in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Prayer Pilgrimage.

Albrecht Fuchs

What do Martin Kippenberger, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, John Baldessari, Wolfgang Tillmans, Isabella Rossellini, Larry Clark and Ennio Morricone have in common? They have all been candidly captured by the lens of Albrecht Fuchs. Here, published for the first time, we see the familiar subjects gazing at the viewer with open demeanor, at home in their environment. These are meticulously constructed images, both in terms of the use of light and color composition. His methodology of respectful distance and loving empathy leads to a strange tension in his photographs, underlying the quietude and equilibrium in the compositions. Photographer Albrecht Fuchs is famous for his color portraits, a field he has been working in for over ten years. His photographs have been displayed in numerous exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Essay by Mark von Schlegell.

Albrecht Fuchs

MK95

The centerpiece of this impressive collection of Albrecht Fuchs photographs (nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2008) is Fuchs’ photos of the controversial conceptual artist Martin Kippenberger, whose untimely death in 1997 cemented his reputation as the enfant terrible of contemporary German art. In an homage to Joseph Beuys’ foray to the American West, Fuchs took Kippenberger to Dawson City; but wherever the two worked together, they struck sparks of creativity. The book is published in an oversized format, carefully printed with rich full color reproductions. An amazing follow up to Fuchs past publication, Portraits, and a must-have for Kippenberger followers.

Seiichi Furuya

Mémoires 1984 – 1987

Japanese photographer Seiichi Furuya’s best-known works have been his heart-rending exploration of his relationship with his wife, Christine, who after years of battling mental illness, leapt from their ninth-floor apartment in 1985, leaving him and their child. Over the intervening 25 years, Furuya has published several books including formal portraits of Christine and, even harder to take, everyday-life snapshots that are almost luminescent in their ordinariness. This deeply personal photo essay, the last of Furuya’s Mémoires compositions, covers the Furuya family’s everyday life while living in the former East German Republic during the time of two “falls” – the end of the East German government system, and the other “fall” that ended a family. Includes an essay by the late East German writer and film director, Einar Schleef.
