Unique Pieces in Series

Hubert Butin & Thomas Olbricht (Eds.)

At first glance, the phrase “Unique Pieces in Series” seems to be a contradiction in terms. How can something that supposedly exists only once be present several times? Yet, some editions by German artist Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) embody this particular principle of uniqueness in series. In his painting editions, photographic works, prints, drawings and multiples, Richter has developed a way of varying individual pieces within their respective identical production method. An entire edition thus consists of unique variants that are deliberately different. In conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Gerhard Richter: The Editions, Museum Folkwang, Essen (2017), an informative hardbound catalog will follow combining both featured works along with examples from associated series and mediums. Gerhard Richter’s former studio assistant, Hubert Butin, along with curator Thomas Olbricht have joined together to create this important look into the world of Richter and his unique artistic practice.

Grey Light
Left and Right Back, High Up, Two Small Windows

Alexandra McIntosh & Nicolaus Schafhausen (Eds.)

A major new work by London-based contemporary British video artist Hannah Rickards at the Fogo Island Arts, Grey Light is a two-screen projected video installation with eight channels of sound. Structured rhythmically around the pattern of a foghorn sounding, the piece embraces the foghorn as an auditory marker for non-visibility, or imagelessness. This slender exhibition catalog and artist book, the second publication from Fogo Island Arts, features Rickard’s striking new photographic imagery drawn from the installation’s materials and production process. Like Rickards’s work, the publication aims to bridge the distance between visual experience and its expression in language, whether spoken, written or gestural. Text by British arts writer Melissa Gronlund and conversation between Rickards and internationally distinguished curator Nicolaus Schafhausen. Rickards’s work has been widely exhibited in Canada, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Whitechapel Gallery, London, Johann Koenig, Berlin and Witte de With, Rotterdam.

Mask, the new artist book by Swiss photographer Luciano Rigolini presents a series of automobile grilles—sculptures in their own right—from American cars built between 1955 and 1962, a period in which engineering technology ushered in unprecedented creative possibilities in automotive design. It is this object quality that interests Rigolini, who for several years now has been collecting images of objects such as urban furniture, emptied of human presence or trace, from sales or industrial catalogs. For Mask, Rigolini scanned images of various automobile fronts and placed each grille in the center of a blank page with only a caption indicating the year of manufacture, brand or model. The singular, decontextualized image produces a distancing but startling effect allowing the viewer to appreciate the raw design elements and unlimited possibilities of a country in the grips of a huge product and design revolution.

Circles, Colour Structure Studies 1970/71

This elegant, slim catalog accompanies Bridget Riley’s exhibition Circles Colour Structure: Studies 1970/71, shown at Karsten Schubert in London November 2008-January 2009. This series of 22 gouaches was shown and published here for the first time, accompanied by an interview between the artist and her close friend Robert Kudielka, done in 1972, just following the creation of the works. “The studies I make have different purposes,” Riley said. “Obviously, many studies will be discarded en route to a painting, though they may still be interesting as visual statements.” A fascinating look at the process of this important artist.

Colour, Stripes, Planes and Curves

An essential publication for followers of the influential painter Bridget Riley, this exhibition catalog traces the artist’s progress through the agency of stripes, planes and curves through her paintings and studies from the past 30 years. Riley’s early color paintings were strongly influenced by the discoveries of Seurat and the Impressionists. Study of Cézanne, in particular his practice of drawing with color and a desire to dig deeper into pictorial space, led to the introduction of planes in grids formed by the junction of intersecting verticals and diagonals – and of colors and contrasts. Includes an interview with the artist conducted by the Director of Kettle’s Yard, Michael Harrison.
